Dogs on the Beach

Dogs are banned from Colwyn Bay’s main beach between 1 May and 30 September. This is the standard seasonal restriction across most of the North Wales coast during the bathing season. Outside these dates, dogs are welcome on the beach year-round. The restriction applies to the main Colwyn Bay beach between the pier and Porth Eirias; Rhos-on-Sea beach has its own restrictions — check signage on arrival.
The promenade is dog-friendly year-round. The two-mile flat promenade from Rhos-on-Sea to the eastern end of the bay is one of the best dog walks in the area for those who want sea views without beach access restrictions.
Best Dog Walks Near Colwyn Bay
Bryn Euryn Local Nature Reserve is one of the best dog walks in the area — varied terrain, woodland paths, open hilltop with views across the bay, and generally quiet on weekdays. Dogs must be kept on leads within the nature reserve. The approach paths from the residential streets above the town can be walked on or off lead depending on the route.
Pwllycrochan Woods above the town centre offer shaded woodland walking in the Pwllycrochan valley — excellent in summer when the beach is off-limits. Well-maintained paths and a stream make this a popular dog-walking destination for local residents.
Little Orme is a more exposed headland walk with coastal views — good for a longer outing, with access to Angel Bay on the far side. Dogs welcome on the approach paths; the nature reserve section has restrictions.
Dog-Friendly Cafes
The cafe at Porth Eirias has outdoor seating that is generally dog-friendly — outside the main Bryn Williams restaurant, the waterfront terrace area works well for a coffee with a dog. Several of the town centre and Rhos-on-Sea cafes are tolerant of well-behaved dogs outside; checking with the individual cafe before arriving is good practice.
Dog-Friendly Accommodation
A good number of guest houses, B&Bs and self-catering properties in Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea accept dogs — filtering by “pet-friendly” on Booking.com and Sykes Cottages will show current options with reviews. Self-catering properties with gardens are the most practical choice for dog owners planning a longer stay. When booking, confirm the specific policy (number of dogs, size restrictions, any additional charge) before finalising.
