The Promenade

Colwyn Bay’s promenade stretches for over two miles along the seafront, running from Rhos-on-Sea in the west to the eastern end of the bay near Old Colwyn. The walkway is flat and wide throughout — originally built in the Victorian era as Colwyn Bay was developed as a seaside resort, and modernised in stages since. It is one of the longer stretches of accessible promenade on the North Wales coast.
At the western end, the promenade opens onto Porth Eirias — the watersports complex with the Bryn Williams restaurant and cafe. At the eastern end it transitions into the approach to the Little Orme headland. In between sits Pier Bae Colwyn (Victoria Pier), the beach, and sea views across the bay toward the Great Orme and the Conwy headland.
Walking the Promenade
The full promenade walk from Rhos-on-Sea to the eastern bay and back is around four miles — a comfortable morning or afternoon out with sea views throughout. The one-way walk from Rhos-on-Sea to the Pier takes around 30–40 minutes at a relaxed pace. On a clear day, the panorama across Colwyn Bay to the Great Orme and beyond to the Carneddau mountains behind Conwy is one of the better coastal views in North Wales.
The promenade is at its best in the two hours either side of low tide, when the full width of the sandy beach is revealed. Check tide times before visiting if you want to combine a promenade walk with time on the beach itself.
Cycling
The promenade is shared with cyclists for much of its length. Cycling along the promenade is permitted outside peak times, and the flat surface makes it an easy route for all abilities. The coastal cycle route to Llandudno continues from the western end of the promenade through Rhos-on-Sea toward Llandudno. Bikes can be brought on trains at Colwyn Bay station subject to availability.
Facilities Along the Promenade
Public toilets are available at Porth Eirias at the western end and at several points along the promenade. Seasonal cafes and kiosks operate on the seafront in summer. The Bryn Williams restaurant and cafe at Porth Eirias are the best formal food and drink options on the promenade. Benches are provided at regular intervals. The surface is fully accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs throughout.
