Arriving by Train

Colwyn Bay is on the North Wales Coast Line with regular services from Chester, Manchester, Rhyl, Llandudno Junction and Holyhead. The station is in the town centre, 10–15 minutes on foot from the seafront. For most purposes — beach, promenade, town centre restaurants and cafes — arriving by train and walking works well.

On Foot
Colwyn Bay’s seafront and town centre are compact and walkable. The promenade runs for over two miles from Rhos-on-Sea to the eastern end of the bay — entirely flat and easy. The town centre is a short walk from the station. Rhos-on-Sea, Porth Eirias and the Victoria Pier are all walkable from the station in 15–25 minutes.
Walks further afield — Bryn Euryn, Little Orme and Pwllycrochan Woods — all start within walking distance of the town centre. The coast walk to Rhos-on-Sea is particularly good on a clear day.
By Bus
Local bus services in Colwyn Bay are operated by Arriva and other operators. The main bus stops are in the town centre on Abergele Road. Services connect Colwyn Bay with Rhos-on-Sea, Old Colwyn, Llandudno Junction and Llandudno. Bus routes in North Wales can be infrequent, particularly on Sundays and evenings — check Traveline Cymru (traveline.cymru) for current timetables before planning a day around buses.
For the Welsh Mountain Zoo, the bus is the practical alternative to a car — the zoo is on elevated ground above the town and the walk is steep. A taxi from the station is under 10 minutes.
Day Trips Without a Car
The train makes several key day trips straightforward without a car. Llandudno is 20 minutes east with multiple services per hour — the Great Orme and Llandudno town centre are then walkable from Llandudno station. Conwy is 10 minutes west; the walled town, castle and quay are all a short walk from Conwy station.
For Snowdonia, the Conwy Valley Railway runs from Llandudno Junction (one stop west) up to Betws-y-Coed and Blaenau Ffestiniog — one of the most scenic rail journeys in Wales and the most accessible route into Snowdonia by train. Change at Llandudno Junction.
Cycling
The North Wales Coastal Cycle Route passes through Colwyn Bay and offers a flat, traffic-light route eastward to Llandudno. Cycling westward along the coast is also possible toward Abergele and Rhyl. Bike hire is available in the area — check locally for current providers. The promenade itself is a pleasant cycling route outside peak times.
