Conwy Castle is one of the finest medieval castles in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and it is barely 10 minutes from Colwyn Bay. Built between 1283 and 1289 by Edward I as part of his campaign to control Wales, the castle and its surrounding town walls have survived remarkably intact. The combination of the castle, the complete circuit of medieval town walls, the Victorian suspension bridge, and the estuary setting makes Conwy one of the most rewarding half-day trips anywhere in North Wales.

For more on the town, see conwy.com – the dedicated guide to Conwy covering accommodation, restaurants and all the town’s attractions in full.

Getting There from Colwyn Bay

By car: Take the A55 westbound from Colwyn Bay – Conwy is the first junction (J17). The drive takes around 10 minutes. There is pay-and-display parking near the castle entrance and at Morfa Bach car park on the approach to the town. Parking is limited in peak summer – arrive early or use the park-and-walk option on the edge of the town.

By train: Conwy station is one stop from Colwyn Bay on the Transport for Wales North Wales Coast line. The journey takes 8 minutes. The station is a short walk from the castle. Check the Transport for Wales timetable in advance as not all services stop at Conwy – most do, but a few fast services skip it. The Colwyn Bay station guide has timetable and ticketing information.

What to See

Conwy Castle (Cadw): The castle itself has eight towers and a great hall, with extensive views from the battlements over the estuary, the Snowdonia mountains, and the coast toward Colwyn Bay. Entry is charged – book tickets in advance at cadw.gov.wales to avoid queues in peak season. The inner ward, great bow, and royal apartments give a good sense of the castle’s scale and the strategic thinking behind its construction.

Town Walls: Conwy has the most complete circuit of medieval town walls in Wales – you can walk much of the wall-walk with views over the rooftops and out to sea. The walls are free to walk and take about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace.

Aberconwy House: A National Trust-owned medieval merchant’s house on Castle Street – the oldest surviving dwelling in Conwy, dating from the 14th century. Small but remarkable.

The Harbour & Quay: Conwy’s working quayside has a row of historic buildings, the Smallest House in Great Britain (a genuine record holder), and views across the estuary to the Conwy mountain. The quay is the best place for lunch or a coffee after the castle.

Practical Information

Conwy Castle is managed by Cadw (Welsh Government Historic Environment Service). The castle is open year-round but hours vary by season – check cadw.gov.wales for current opening times and prices. Cadw membership gives free entry to all Welsh historic monuments including Harlech, Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Criccieth castles – worth considering if you plan more than one castle visit during a North Wales holiday.

For a longer day combining two destinations, Conwy pairs well with a visit to the Great Orme from Llandudno (also accessible from Colwyn Bay in under 25 minutes). For more days out from Colwyn Bay, see the day trips guide.
