Best Time to Visit Colwyn Bay

A seasonal guide to the North Wales coast – weather, crowds and what’s open when

Summer: June to August

Summer is the obvious peak. The beach and promenade are at their best, Porth Eirias watersports are in full operation, and the longer days make the most of walks to Bryn Euryn and Little Orme. The Welsh Mountain Zoo is busiest in summer but also most rewarding – many animals are most active in warmer weather and the outdoor habitats are at their best.

The downsides are predictable: seafront parking fills early on sunny days, the Bryn Williams restaurant needs advance booking, and prices across all accommodation types are higher. July and August school holidays bring the biggest crowds. June and September offer a better balance of good weather with more manageable visitor numbers.

Spring: March to May

Spring is increasingly popular for North Wales coast visits. Accommodation prices are lower, the zoo is quieter, and the coast path walks to Bryn Euryn and Little Orme are at their best – bluebells in the woods, gorse on the headlands, and clear visibility across the bay. The promenade is pleasant on sunny spring days without the summer crowds.

Weather in spring is variable on the North Wales coast – cold winds off the Irish Sea are common in March and April. A waterproof layer is always sensible. The upside is the dramatic skies and strong light that make photography of the bay particularly rewarding.

Autumn: September to November

September is one of the best months: summer crowds have thinned, temperatures are still mild enough for the beach and outdoor activities, and the town feels more like itself. Stadiwm Eirias is into its rugby season, bringing a different energy to the town on match weekends.

October and November bring the start of the winter storms – watching a westerly hit the promenade from a safe vantage point is a genuinely impressive North Wales experience. The zoo and main attractions remain open, though visitor numbers drop sharply after school half-term in late October.

Winter: December to February

Colwyn Bay is quiet in winter, which makes it affordable and uncrowded. The Welsh Mountain Zoo operates year-round, as does the Victoria Pier and promenade. The town’s pubs and restaurants are open and often more relaxed than in summer. Storm-watching from the promenade can be spectacular in January and February.

Winter travel on the North Wales Coast Line is reliable – trains are not significantly affected by North Wales weather in a normal year. If you are travelling specifically for outdoor activities, check conditions at Bryn Euryn and Pwllycrochan Woods as paths can be muddy after prolonged rain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Colwyn Bay?

June and September offer the best balance – warm enough for the beach and zoo, without the peak July–August crowds and prices. September also has the added draw of the Eirias Stadium rugby season starting.

Is Colwyn Bay busy in summer?

Yes, particularly July and August school holidays. Seafront parking and the Bryn Williams restaurant fill early, and accommodation prices rise. Arriving before 10am in peak season significantly improves your chances of a seafront space.

Is Colwyn Bay worth visiting in winter?

Yes. It is especially worthwhile for beach space, family attractions, seafront walking, events and using the coast as a base for wider North Wales trips.
